Press Release: Mayor O'Connor Joins Habitat Pittsburgh for Groundbreaking of New Affordable Housing Development

PITTSBURGH, PA – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh staff, board, and supporters will be joined by the Honorable Corey O’Connor, Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, on September 30, 2026 to break ground on a new affordable housing development. The three homes being built by Habitat Pittsburgh will provide first-time homeownership to three families in the east-end community of Homewood. The homes are being constructed on property acquired through Habitat Pittsburgh’s partnership with the City of Pittsburgh Land Bank.
Dr. Howard B. Slaughter, Jr., President & CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh said, “Homeownership can change the trajectory of an entire community and the impact of today will be felt for decades. Children will grow up in these homes. Families will build equity. Neighborhood self-awareness will deepen, which is how Habitat Pittsburgh helps to strengthen families and communities; by building one home at a time.”

We are grateful to partner on these new, quality affordable homes and look forward to seeing families build a future in this community.”
This year marks Habitat Pittsburgh’s 40th anniversary of providing decent, affordable homeownership and home repair opportunities for low-income families in the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. Habitat Pittsburgh has built and sold seven homes in Homewood, three of which are adjacent to this new development. Each Habitat Pittsburgh home is sold with an affordable, 30-year, 0% fixed-interest rate mortgage. The new homes will provide families with safe, stable housing, as well as, an opportunity to build equity and generational wealth.
