Press Release: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh and PA Health & Wellness Announce Partnership to Provide Home Repairs

PITTSBURGH, PA – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh announces today the launch of the Habitat Pittsburgh Aging in Place Critical Repair Program. This program will cover the costs of eligible interior and exterior home repairs and modifications for homeowners over the age of 62. The program aims to increase the safety, accessibility, condition, and livability of the home and is funded in part by a $300,000 grant from Pennsylvania Health & Wellness, Inc.


"Now, more than ever, providing financial support for individuals Aging in Place is a critical component of the work we do at Habitat Pittsburgh,” said Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh President & CEO, Dr. Howard B. Slaughter. “The Pittsburgh region has a large population of Senior Citizens and because Americans are living longer a greater level of support is warranted and extremely important to facilitate."


PA Health & Wellness is a Pennsylvania-based health plan that supports home and community-based services for older Pennsylvanians and people with disabilities. Nearly 75,000 participants across the state are eligible for home modifications that improve home safety and help keep them in their homes as long as possible and support greater independence.


“One of the most important parts of living healthy is having a safe and sound place to call home,” said Marc Giordano, Plan President and CEO of PA Health & Wellness. “By partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh, we are helping to keep people in their homes where and remain a vibrant part of the community.”


Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh’s Aging in Place Critical Home Repair Program is designed to help low-income families remain in their existing home by making home repairs for which there is a need. The program addresses five key areas: Safety, Security, Accessibility, Code Violations and Energy Efficiency.


To qualify, applicants must fall within the following criteria: own and live in a home in Allegheny County; must be 62+ (senior citizen) or over the age of 21 with a disability; household gross income must be below 80% of the area median family income.
